The funding allows new construction, renter flexibility, and housing for displaced people.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a number of housing waivers they are providing to support wildfire recovery efforts in Hawai’i.
The department is suspending the public services cap for their Community Development Block Grant to provide as much food and water as possible. They are allowing new construction to receive funds through that grant to build new homes quickly. The department is also providing rental assistance flexibility to tenants of low-income housing buildings and waiving matching payment requirements to help tenants become rehoused as quickly as possible.
“After a disaster, priorities shift towards recovery,” said HUD Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) for Community Planning and Development Marion McFadden. “We are empowering local grantees to use existing resources for their most pressing needs and have enacted every flexibility within our authority.”
“HUD is doing everything in our power to ensure that survivors of these devastating fires have a safe place to call home,” PDAS McFadden said.
